My first night....

I spent my first night at my new place.   I also go my queen size bed from Costco however it is not set up yet.  Sleeping in the spare room.  Well I guess it wasn't the best night to move in.  I was sick and had a cough and also FIREWORKS!!

Oh yes here is a picture of the Costco haul.

Also my bike goes in the garage since I can't get the door to work to get my car in there.

Homeowner at 28

Go ahead and queue the music.

I don’t like to blow my own horn but here goes.  I bought my first house at the age of 28.  Well that’s the story I’m going to tell.  The reality is that I didn’t move in until almost a full 2 months after I turned 29.  However my deal was accepted one day before my 29th birthday so I’m going with my story of 28.

Now owning a home was a goal of mine that I thought I wanted after I was married for a few years.  Well I’m not married.  I am not even close to being married.  I love my independence and I have heard that I am too picky in what I want.   Seriously I love my independence to go here or there whenever.  I just can’t see myself tied down to someone who can’t pull their own weight.  I want to want that person in my life not NEED them.  Okay back to the house story at hand.

In August 2012 I started working with a realtor.  She had me meet with a mortgage lender to see if it was even possible for me to afford it.  So after the question and answer part of our meeting he told me I had really good credit and that as soon as I found a house he would give me my pre-approval letter.  Now let me tell you when looking for a house you want to be pre-approved not just pre-qualified.

August I found my dream house in the perfect neighborhood!  Well my dreams were crushed because my offer was not accepted. Boohoo how could life go on?  Seriously I was depressed for days.  Then September came around and I think I looked at over 20 houses and made about 5 offers with no result.  (See I tell you out of the 20 only 5…picky).  Now I put in 3 more offers at the beginning of October with my heart crushed I felt like this process was going to take forever.  Then I get the email….Your offer has been accepted!!  Wooohooo I am going to own a house.  Wooohoooo….wait now what?  Well the month of November it was email after email of information to bring in to my loan guy then my realtor then inspections and appraisals. So I get my keys in December right well…. again more waiting.  I then go in to the escrow office and sign the paperwork saying the house is MINE.  I feel like those little birds in finding nemo….mine….mine…MINE…MINE.  Well no not yet you have to wait week before you get your keys…

So yesterday I got my keys!! And now begins the process of moving in.  I have the luxury of moving in when I am on holiday from work.  The best part is no major work has to be done.  Well expect kill the roses….

Long Story about a Silly Hat

So the story behind the cozy hat…

So let me begin this by saying I used to work at Michael’s Craft and Yarn Store. I worked there for about 4 or 5 years. It was a good fun job but I wanted something else…or maybe I just wanted to work with new people. Well the day I submitted my 2 week notice to our store manager I got in a major tif with a customer. I know the customer is always right but sometimes they are just stupid. So the manager on duty had to play nice with that customer because I didn’t feel like taking their abuse. Well apparently that came off as ‘not normal’. Yes not normal from me because I am the super nicest person you would ever have work for you and a hard worker at that. So the next day after my shift I get called in to talk with the store manager about ‘the incident’ and if that was the reason I was leaving. I told her that I found an excellent job elsewhere and it was time for me to leave. Apparently I had upset this other manager so instead of 2 weeks that was my last day. It was completely my choice but with that said I gave her the low down of everyone in the store who was good and who was bad; who was stealing and who was near the brink of sexual harassment….more of an annoyance. So I left that store with the intentions of never going back again…EVER.

Well from time to time I want to see what clearance items I can score from the store so I go and try not to be spotted. I know now that the majority of the people that used to work there don’t anymore.

So on one of my spy trips to Michael’s I came across this yarn that said it glowed in the dark. What?! Glow in the dark….I must have a million to make myself glow in the dark. Okay I will settle for 2 skeins to test and see if this yarn really does glow in the dark. The yarn was from Bernat and now has been discontinued. Well I tried to knit socks with them (don’t laugh…It was my first attempt of just getting the basics down). So I ripped them out because eww. Then one of my co-workers was asking me about a rasta type hat. I thought yeah no problem. I figured well let me try to make one first and then I will make you one. So I cast on for the Bad Hair Day Hat by Karen Harper.

Well I took it to work and asked her what she thought. She loved it! So guess what? I gave that one to her.

End of story…. I saw her wear it once or twice but I think if she would have held out for a rasta version it would have worked out to be her favorite hat.

The only pictures I have of it is on my ravelry page.

Walked the San Francisco Bridge

Yes I have accomplished one thing off of my 30 things to do before turning 30...so far.
My mother, sister and I went to San Francisco this November and accomplished this goal. We stayed at the Comfort Inn By the Bay in the Russian Hill area.  It was a really nice place to stay.
My bed and the view of the bridge

So in the morning we drove to the bridge to walk it but it was not that simple.  There was construction and Siri was well not using google maps (I really just want to say she was being stupid but I think it is because Siri and Google are not friends right now).  So we did not make the exit Presidio/Golden Gate because of construction.  The sign was in the way!!!! So we crossed over the bridge.  My sister was probably frustrated with me but I am putting all the blame on Siri. So we leave San Francisco County and enter Marin County.

We exit at Vista Point and decide that since there is free parking (well 4 hours free but it wasn't gonna take that long right...) we will take advantage of this and do our bridge walk.

Now let me tell you a little secret. I told my mom and sister the bridge walk was 1.5 miles to walk so a total of 3 right...well it is actually 3.6 miles long.

I know I know I felt kind of bad since that day was kind of windy but it was something I needed to do.  While I was there I also ran on the bridge because they had speedometers for bicyclist and well with a race coming up the next day I wanted to see how fast I was.  It clocked me at 12-13 miles per hour...

Much fun! I would go back and do it again.

Oh yeah you can check out my sister post about our experiance.

30 Things to Do Before I Turn 30

So last year my sister mentioned to me how she would like to take an Aerial Class and I came across a blog  that talked about the experience of taking the class. Also I decided to go through her blog and read her list of goals she wanted to do before she turned thirty. I thought well I will try that too however I only had a year and a half to accomplish these things. So here is my list:

Go horseback riding
Try a Pole Dance Class
Try an Aerial Class
Knit the Lily shawl
Walk the San Francisco Bridge
Try Snowboarding
Try Surfing
Stamp in passport
Attend a Green Bay Packer Game
Do a 30 day fast/juice
Learn to ride a bike
Visit the Grand Canyon
Take a Hike
Goal weight of 130
365 picture project
Run in a 10k race
Take Hot air balloon ride
Try Ballroom dancing
Try Archery
Watch a Cirque du Soleil show
Crux climb to top
Visit a National Park
Learn Hindi
Attempt to Bartend
Take Pottery class
Simplify my closet
Have a Spa day
Try yoga
Improve Cooking skills

I have already accomplished a few of these items and will post a seperate blog on my accomplishments.
Oh and on a side note I know I will not accomplish everything on my list since I am buying my first house this month and I am okay with that.  I sure am gonna try to do as much as possible though.  I look forward to creating my 35 before 35 list when I turn 30.

Fingerless Mitts for Cynthia

So back in 2008 my friend was getting married. She, a California girl, was going to marry a man who lived in New York. There wedding was taking place in December so guess what….weather shock! We live in sunny California and now she was moving to Winterland New York. So knowing that I wanted to get her a goodbye present she could use I knit her mitts in her favorite color. I hope she enjoyed them!! Guess what?! This was my first fingerless mittens and cable work. I was on my way to being a real knitter.
Can you see the sheen of the acrylic....

This picture is more true to the color.

What's on my needles?

I haven’t been knitting much but when the weather turns a tad cooler I start up again. So I have a few things cast on like any normal knitter would. I still am working on Maleficent. You can find the pattern here: Percy Shawl~ http://rosesontoast.com/patterns/

I also found a UFO while packing some of my yarn. I called it my NY autum scarf. Pictures will come later... However here is the link of the pattern: http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/PATTedgar.html

My recient cast on was a frilly scarf because someone gave me the yarn and I wanted to try it out. Here is a pic of what it looks like right now:

I am also supposed to start a KAL (knitalong) with my friend Maria. I am knitting myself a sweater. ^_^ Here is the pattern link: http://philosoknitter.blogspot.com/2008/05/francis-pattern.html#
This is the yarn I am using:
Happy knitting!

MIA - Missing in action

Well as you know when I get busy and don’t make time to write I can go a long time with anything on the blog.  For the last 5 months I have been taking an online Italian course http://italianonline.blogspot.com/.  This class is pretty intense. I like the class because even though I am doing the work online I feeling I am learning the basic language vocabulary and grammar. However since I don’t have people to practice with my pronunciation of works is not that great. I think some time immersed in the language would really help. Trip to Italy you say?

Another reason (excuse) was since July/August I have been in search of buying a house.  Yup you read right.  I am going to be a homeowner.  I found a few houses but after about 2/3 long months one of my offers was finally accepted.  The process is just as long or longer after.  Hopefully all goes well and I get to move in before the New Year.
I have also have been working on my 30 goals before I turn 30.  So during this time away from the blogger I was training to run in a 10k in San Francisco.  You think I would have lost a bunch of weight but my amazing sister stuck to plan more than I did.  You can read about her experience here:http://xanaxjunkee.blogspot.com/2012/11/mermaid-series-san-francisco.html

So with that all said and done…I think I had put too much on my plate cuz I came down with something called Bell’s palsy.  I have to say I am 90% recovered.  I am just trying to stay calm and not stress so much.

I will fill all y’all in more later with a bit more detail on everything.
My big purchase this year!!!

Weight Watchers Success

I know you have not heard from me in a while.  Don't worry I have not fallen off the wagon.  However I feel like I am grabbing the rains and being pulled along.  Or maybe its like a vigorous ride on a machanical bull ride ready to be flung off.  But in all seriousness here are a few highlights of my progress and updates on what I have been up to.

1.  I recieved my 5% sticker from weight watchers.  I recieved it a while ago but I wanted to make sure I actually deserved it and didn't sabatoge myself after.  My 5% loss was 9lbs.  Now I need to work on my 10% which is to loose 17lbs.

2. I have also earned (2) 5lbs stars.  I got my second 5lb. star when I lost my 5%.  However the last couple of weeks I have been in a plateu where I gain and loose 1lb.

3. I am doing better with my running.  I have a 10k race in about a month.

4. I took a kickboxing class in the summer which really helped my weighloss efforts.

Here is a pic of my charm for attending WW meetings.

Here is a pic of what I kind of look like right now.

Weight Watcher Meeting Review

I thought I was going to have a bad week since last weekend I went to the drive in with my family to see The Avengers and John Carter.  I ate pizza; Not any old pizza but delicious white sauce with fluffy crust pizza.  I also had coconut which is a lot of points.  Example 1 cup is 8 points.  I really really wanted to have nachos but I was too full.  I love nacho cheese!

The ones at my drive in are double in size ^_^
I guess I made it up during the week since I lost 1 pound.  I am on week 7 attending WW meetings and I have so far lost 7.8 pounds. I need to lose 1.2 more pounds to reach my 5% mark.  I can really tell on my arms that I am losing weight.  I think I am pretty vain because when I wash my hands in the bathroom I take a little longer rubbing the soap in because I am watching the muscles in my arm move.

Today at our WW meeting we discussed Motivation.  Thus the challenge began.  To motivate us our leader Debbie has challenged her groups to lose 10 pounds in 8 weeks.  She will be putting together a grand price basket to raffle off at the end of the challenge.  How do we get our names in the raffle?  Every time we lose one pound we get our name submitted.  (Wish it would have started today.) Every time our group loses 15 pounds as a unit we all get entered into the raffle.  So it begins!

So we were asked what keeps us motivated.  I couldn’t think of anything right away.  I thought maybe my health but I feel pretty good.  Then I thought maybe a guy but don’t have my own or even an attractive one I want to look all good for.  Then it came to me: Travel.  I love to travel and I like to make an impact as a traveler.  I like to dress well when traveling and looking good is important to me.  I tell you vain. I shouldn’t care what random people I will never see again think but I do.  I want them to look at me and think ‘she is beautiful’, ‘she has it all together’, ‘she looks classy’.

She also asked us what motivates us to go to the gym.  I go to the gym at 4am.  Some days I don’t want to but I do.  I have 2 things that motivate me.  One is my sticker calendar at home.  Growing up I would always get stickers and stamps on my school work if I did well.  I loved those teachers and my stamp of job well done.  So I bought a calendar and put all 12 months up on my wall.  Each time I go to the gym I get a sticker.  I love to see that I make it at least 3 times a week.  My other motivation to be at the gym at 4am is because I like to use the weights in the ‘men’s’ side.  And by going early I only have to deal with a few older men opposed to a lot of men and women taking up the whole area.  I love those older guys they are so dedicated.  Not to get off on a tangent but I love seeing the regulars in the morning.  I wonder if they think of me that way too.
This is an old picture trust me there are more stickers on it now

So we were left with this quote to think about for the week:

Sock - atini

So I had been wanting to make myself some socks. I thought maybe if I started with an easy one I could eventually make a big person sock. Well I made the kid sock in 2008 for my nephew. It is now 2012 and I have yet to make myself a pair of socks. I seem to find shawls I want to make for myself with the pretty yarn instead.

I do have to mention that I was getting a case of SSS(Single Sock Syndrome) after I knit the first sock. I didn’t want to do the second one. I did one yay. But how was I gonna get the kid to wear only one.

So here goes:

Everyone is on Weight Watchers

Seriously everyone I talk to about how happy I am to be on Weight Watchers again tells me that someone I know is on it too. I don't care who knows I am trying to lose weight and get fit again.

I have my friend Maria who goes with me to Friday morning meetings.  Actually she goes to weigh in and then usually leaves because she has a standing breakfast with family every Friday.  However I am okay with that because besides Maria my friend Denise attends also I have two gals from work going.  I also found out that one girl that goes to the same gym I go to attends that morning meeting as well.  I am making new friends.

Now besides those that attend meetings I have about 4 friends I can think of who are doing the program at home and not attending the meetings.

I love it because we are able to educate each other and motivate and support one another as well.

Okay Okay one of my coworkers is on Jenny Craig....for now.

Double Cap Gift

I decided I wanted to make the Double Cap by Kat Coyle for my sister on my trip to New York in 2008. I brought along my copy of the Knitscene magazine to read on the plane. When I saw this picture I just knew I had to make this for my sister.

I made it in black for her in hopes of adding pink on the corners to represent cat ears. This cap was made on straight needles apposed to the round.

I have to say since I have invested in my needles I love working in the round when I can.
I think I will have to make myself one since it looks so cute!

I would love to make one in a heather or tweed yarn since black is not so fun to work with.

Update: This cap I made has made it’s way from my sister to the Goodwill or VTC thrift store. I saw it leave the garage sale to a bag that was meant for the thrift store. I would have saved it for myself but I didn’t want to have to worry about smoke or dog essence. However my sister is still knit worthy.

Souvenir Yarn

When I went to New York in 2008, I went to a flea market with my aunt and uncle. It was great fun we got on a bus from Jersey to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. We were not really sure what we would do but go sightseeing since it was a Sunday. So I had one of those what to do in New York booklet that our hotel left us so I figured let’s go to the flea market. So we walked down 8th towards central park, then we took a left on 57thbecause well we needed to eat and use the loo so I found a CVS. I really can’t remember what we ate just that we did because my uncle was getting cranky because he had not eaten. After we continued walking on Columbia until we got to Broadway and then finally merged on to Amsterdam Ave then to 72ndStreet. Am I crazy? Yes. However we had a wonderful time trying to decide what I wanted to get. I came across this wonderful vendor whom sold yup you guessed it yarn. I had already looked at some yarn that someone had hand spun and dyed but it did not interest me. However I had to have souvenir yarn so this second vendor had some light brown alpaca I bought for a scarf. When I got back to my side of the world I started to knit it up and boy did it feel good. When I finished the scarf was only about 26” long. This was no scarf at all. So what could I do…give it away. I gave it to my aunt who picked out the yarn and she loves it because it’s like a cowl she just pins it together and goes. I love knitting for my aunt because she uses everything I give her. Unlike other family members who put it away never to be seen again or wears it once or twice and then off to the thrift store.

One Month on Weight Watchers

So I joined Weight Watchers on March 30,2012.  I weighed in at 178. I know you will look at my picture and think you don’t look that bad but my body hides the fat in an even way so I don’t have a doughnut around my waist or bowling balls for a butt.

Since I have begun my weight watchers journey I have attended the meetings regularly.  I also have encouraged a hand full of my friends to come back to weight watchers with me.  I have to say it was my friend Maria who encouraged me to go back and she has helped me stay on track.  I also have been keeping up with my gym attendance.  Since October 2011 I have been going to the gym at least 3 times a week for an hour or hour and a half.  It is great that my friend Maria meets me at the gym at 4am.  Although we do not have to be joined at the hip it is nice that we both show up say hi and get to our own workout.  If we don’t see each other there one of us gets a text message saying “Where are you? I’m here”.  Which is good because sometimes we accidentally sleep in.

So for my good news today I got my 5lb star sticker.

I am on my way to loosing my 5% which is 9lbs.  I have to say that losing those first 5lbs is great.  My fat jeans feel much looser already.  I say fat jeans because I swore I would not buy any jeans until I fit into my old sizes.  Well for work I have to play photographer sometimes so I got one pair to roll around in.  Also my asthma doesn’t bother me as much as it used to since I began running.  That is the main reason I needed to get back on track and be healthy.  As much as I would like to say I have body image issues because I am overweight thus the reason for losing weight but no I am to vain to think of myself as ugly.  Inside or out.  I am doing it for my health.  I hate not being able to breath.  I think if World War 3 were to happen tomorrow I would be dead within the month.  I would suffocate to death because I wouldn’t have access to medicine I need for my asthma.  I just pray that never happens and that I go quietly in my sleep.  So to celebrate my 5lb loss I might take a bike ride or head to the beach.

I am a knitter.

I am known as the queen bee of knitting amongst my friends.

I have to say I do dabble in the crochet arts when I feel like taking on a challenge. My friend put on a crocheting/knitting party back in 2008 and I have to say I did enjoy that gathering. I can remember I took some bread. Not just any bread but delicious friendship bread. I was cranking out bread like once a week and boy was it good. So I shared it with my friends, co-workers, and family. However I had to stop because it was beginning to control my life.

So going back to the party I chose to sit in with the crocheters. Yeah I know it was crazy of me but I wanted to do something to do than to sit and “learn” to knit. We were taught the One Skein Scarf. I have to say I really did enjoy making the scarf however I had limited yarn. I had to redo the scarf like 3 or 4 times to get it just right for my yarn. I think the last yarn party we had was in 2010 where we watched pride and prejudice. I however was ‘teaching’ so I didn’t get to indulge. So I think it is high time we have another yarn party.

Perfect Vision...someday

I went to the eye doctor today and picked out some new specs.  Being almost blind cost me so much money; I spent over $500 dollars.  You think it was because I got brand name glasses but no it is because of my lenses.  I not only have to get them made slimmer due to my astigmatism but also to reduce glare from driving at night.  I also had my eyes dilated today and man did it make it hard to see.  I was wearing sunglasses at work due to the sensitivity of my eye but even the screen was bothering me.  I should have taken the day off from work but I didn’t.  I just suffered there with a headache and cramps.  I hope my weigh-in goes well tomorrow.  I hope I have my car tomorrow.

However this makes me think about getting eye surgery.  If it costs up to $2,000 per eye is it a good investment.  I love wearing glasses but if my vision has stayed the same for 4 years maybe it is time to consider the possibility.  I know it wasn’t one years back because of my astigmatism but technology has improved.
